From Orange City to Corporate City: ‘New Nagpur’ plan takes off

Nagpur: In a major push towards urban expansion and futuristic planning, the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) has set the wheels in motion for the ambitious ‘New Nagpur’ project. Envisioned as a next-generation urban hub, the proposed development will come up on a vast 1,710-acre land parcel, marking one of the largest planned urban initiatives in the region.

To move the project forward, NMRDA has issued an e-tender notice for appointing a consultant who will prepare the blueprint and guide the execution of this ambitious venture.

The authority aims to transform ‘New Nagpur’ into a high-tech, globally competitive urban centre designed to attract start-ups, MSMEs, technology companies, and international service providers. The project is planned as an integrated smart city with state-of-the-art underground civic utilities and advanced infrastructure systems, ensuring efficient and sustainable urban services.

Officials believe that the project will significantly strengthen Nagpur’s position as a major economic and industrial hub in Central India. The upcoming development is expected to function as a modern business district, providing world-class infrastructure for commerce, innovation, and industry.

Vision of a Smart Corporate City

The ‘New Nagpur’ initiative is also seen as a crucial step toward positioning Nagpur as a world-class centre for education, industry, and healthcare. The planned city will feature smart utility solutions, green mobility options such as walkways and flyovers, and a well-planned urban landscape, creating a modern and environmentally sustainable corporate city.

According to NMRDA’s plan, around 692.06 hectares of land will be acquired for the project. Nagpur already hosts several prominent national-level institutions such as Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), along with over 275 educational institutions, making the region a strong candidate for such a large-scale knowledge and innovation hub.

Project cost estimated at Rs 6,400 crore

• The project will be developed in Mouza Ghopli (Rithi) and Mouza Ladgaon (Rithi) villages in Hingna tehsil of Nagpur district.

• The total project area is about 692.06 hectares.

• The estimated cost of land acquisition is around Rs 3,000 crore.

• Development work in the first phase is expected to cost about Rs 3,400 crore.

• The overall estimated project cost stands at approximately Rs 6,400 crore.

• NBCC (India) Limited has been appointed as the project consultant.

Detailed Project Report to be prepared

As per the tender conditions, the appointed consultant will be responsible for preparing a comprehensive Detailed Project Report (DPR) based on a sustainable and long-term development model.

The consultancy will include extensive architectural and engineering services, such as preparing the city’s master plan, designing internal and external infrastructure networks, and planning landscaping and urban aesthetics.

Once implemented, the ‘New Nagpur’ project is expected to reshape the city’s urban landscape and establish it as a futuristic economic and innovation hub for Central India.
