Nagpur: In his first press briefing since his release from Nagpur Central Jail, 56-year-old former Delhi University professor S.N. Saibaba recounted the harrowing ordeal he endured during his incarceration, emphasizing that his survival was nothing short of miraculous, here on Thursday.

Saibaba, who is wheelchair-bound and over 90% handicapped, addressed the media on Thursday, two days after the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court acquitted him and five others of terrorism charges. He described the deplorable conditions he faced in prison, where he was entirely reliant on others for basic necessities like using the toilet and bathing.

The press conference shed light on Saibaba’s journey through the legal system, including his initial conviction by a local court in Gadchiroli in 2017. Despite his deteriorating health and pleas from his wife, Vasantha Kumari, and legal team, Saibaba endured years of mistreatment in custody. This marks the second time in two years that the High Court has overturned Saibaba’s conviction.

Previously, a division bench nullified the Gadchiroli sessions court’s judgment in October 2022, only for the Supreme Court to later overturn the decision. The recent acquittal, following a fresh hearing, underscores the judicial rollercoaster Saibaba has endured.

During the press conference, Saibaba expressed gratitude to his legal team, particularly highlighting the challenges they faced defending him in court. He also spoke out against the arrest of his lawyer, Surendra Gadling, in the Elgar Parishad case, asserting that Gadling was targeted solely for representing him.

As questions arose regarding potential legal action against the state for compensation, Saibaba emphasised his priority on focusing on his health, stating that he had not yet considered pursuing compensation.

Additionally, Saibaba paid tribute to Pandu Narote, a co-accused who tragically passed away due to inadequate medical care in prison. He questioned the fairness of a justice system that allowed such injustices to occur.

Despite the High Court’s verdict on March 5, Saibaba’s release from prison was delayed, a delay attributed by his lawyer, Nihalsing Rathod, to the “high-handedness” of the Nagpur Central Prison authorities.

The press conference served as a platform for Saibaba to share his experiences, reflect on the flaws in the legal system, and express gratitude for the support he received during his tumultuous journey.
