Nagpur: Putting all speculations to rest, Maharashtra Government has appointed UPS Madan as Chief Secretary of State.

Earlier, Madan held important posts as Commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA), Managing Director of Maharashtra Airports Development Authority and was Additional Chief Secretary (Finance).

Following appointment of Dineshkumar Jain as non-judicial member in country’s Lokpal in Delhi, the post of Chief Secretary was vacant and triggered a race among IAS cadre. According to seniority list, the Additional Chief Secretary in General Administration Department Medha Gadgil, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) UPS Madan, Secretary in Ex-Servicemen Welfare Department Sanjivani Kutty, Central Revenue Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey, Mumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and Additional Chief Secretary in Home Department Sanjay Kumar were in the race.

Medha Gadgil was already denied the post of Chief Secretary. Pandey and Kutty are already holding posts of Secretary in Central Government and were also not interested in coming to the state. Therefore, the close contest was between Madan, Mehta and Sanjay Kumar.

Madan is retiring in October while Mehta in September. Hence all eyes were on these two IAS officers. Finally on Tuesday, Madan was appointed as Chief Secretary. He is 1983 batch IAS officer.
