Nagpur: Mercury is soaring in Vidarbha as most of the cities recorded maximum temperature above 40 degrees Celsius mark on Wednesday. Post-Holi the maximum and minimum temperatures have started rising all over Maharashtra.

At 42.8 degrees Celsius, Akola was the hottest place in Maharashtra on Wednesday. Malegaon of Madhya Maharashtra was the second hottest in the State with 42 degrees Celsius. Amravati (41.2 degrees Celsius), Buldhana (41 degrees Celsius), Bramhapuri (40 degrees Celsius), Wardha (40.5 degrees Celsius) and Yavatmal (41 degrees Celsius) breached the summer barrier of 40 degrees Celsius.

On the second consecutive day, Nagpur witnessed maximum temperature at 39 degrees Celsius whereas Gondia recorded the lowest maximum temperature in Vidarbha with 37.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. However, the minimum temperatures in all over Vidarbha crossed the 20.0 degrees Celsius mark on Wednesday.

Yavatmal recorded the highest minimum temperature in Vidarbha with 25.0 degrees Celsius whereas Washim (24.8 degrees Celsius), Wardha (24.2 degrees Celsius), Bramhapuri (24.1 degrees Celsius), and Amravati (24.3 degrees Celsius) recorded the night temperature above 24 degrees mark. Nagpur was 23.6 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has augmented city’s water supply by 10 million litres per day (MLD) to cater to the increased demand in summer. With temperature nearing the 39 degree Celsius mark, the city, which usually requires about 710 MLD water, is now receiving 720 MLD for the last three days.

Out of the 720 MLD, 225 MLD is coming from Kanhan River, while the rest is being pumped from Pench. When the Kanhan river bed dries, the civic body releases water from the right bank canal (RBC) of Pench into the river to meet the city’s demand. The dam, which is the major source of water for Nagpur city, has 61.90% storage.

NMC’s water distribution not only serves the city but also extends to nearby areas such as the Godhani Municipal Council, Bokhara Gram Panchayat and Tirodi where Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna’s housing society is located. These areas receive approximately 2 MLD water daily from NMC.

There are 77 storage reservoirs across the NMC limits, and work on 14 more reservoirs is under progress. Fifty percent of these 77 command areas are receiving water supply between 18 hours and 24 hours, 25% between 6 hours and 18 hours, and 18% between 2 hours and 6 hours.
