Mumbai: Elgar Morcha, a protest march led by Dalit leader and the grandson of Dr B R Ambedkar, Prakash Ambedkar would be taken out in Mumbai. The Elgar Morcha is organised to demand the arrest of Hindutva leader Sambhaji Bhide for his alleged involvement in the Bhima-Koregaon violence that took place in January this year. The Mumbai Police on Sunday denied permission for Elgar March and allowed protesters to hold a rally at Azad Maidan. Catch our live updates on Elgar Morcha in Mumbai here.

Prakash Ambedkar had served an ultimatum to the state government on March 15 demanding the arrest of Sambhaji Bhide by March 26. Bhide along with Milind Ekbote are accused of inciting violence against Dalits during the 200th-anniversary celebrations of the Anglo-Maratha War where the army of Peshwa Bajirao II was vanquished by a small force of the East India Company that comprised a large number of Dalits. Ekbote has been arrested in connection with the case.

Both Ekbote and Bhide – whose admirers include Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis – have vehemently denied playing any role in the January 1 riots and its subsequent fallout. A youth was killed during caste-based clashes and protests had erupted across Maharashtra. On January 2, a day after the violent clashes, the Pune police had lodged a case under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against Bhide and others.
