LOA of 25 companies, including Patanajli, cancelled following a review into the status of units in Mihan

Nagpur: The Mihan-SEZ, it seems, achieving a dubious distinction on the lines of Butibori. The companies that had purchased acres of lands in throwaway prices in 2007, 2008, and 2009 in Mihan, have not started their units till to date. The list of such default companies is long and contained names some big companies. These companies were given lands in acres in view of their reputation. But now the lands are hosting wild trees and bushes instead of industrial units, according to media reports.

Interestingly, the reports said, the companies that were given status as co-developers by MADC (Maharashtra Airport Development Company Ltd) have become lethargic. The L&T Infraventure Development Project Ltd was handed over 20.58 hectare land on December 29, 2008. But the company has done nothing tangible till to date. The DLF Ltd has the largest 56.74 hectare land given in March 2008. But there is no ‘trace’ of the company. Nobody knows where it is!! Similarly, Building Research and Management was allotted 11.87 hectare land in 2008, Asra Realty Venture Pvt Ltd 10.12 hectare in 2007, Echo World Infrastructure Pvt Ltd 11.27 hectare in 2009, and Hasa Corporation was given 1.01 hectare land in 2020. There is no trace of these companies in Mihan as well.

LOA of 25 companies cancelled:
The office of the Development Commissioner (DC) has issued a communication to 25 companies allotted land in Mihan saying that it has been decided to cancel their permission to operate in the SEZ. This includes Patanjali Ayurveda, which has got over 100 acres of land in the SEZ.

The action comes following a review into the status of units in Mihan by the DC’s office. It was found that no records of Letters of Approval (LOA) were found for 11 companies, but land was shown in their name. For the rest, the LOA had expired, yet the land was in their name.

The LOA is the basic requirement for a unit to operate in an SEZ. In other words, it’s like a licence. The LOA comes from the DC office or Board of Approvals (BOA), in case the investor is a co-developer. Both come under the Ministry of Commerce. Each SEZ has a DC. The review shows that nearly half of the companies in the SEZ had a valid LOA or did not have one at all, said sources.

Patanjali, which has over 230 acres in the domestic tariff area (DTA) also has 106 acres within the SEZ. The company was allotted land in 2017. The LOA which expired after the first term was not extended, said a source.
