Nagpur News.

It could not have been any better New Year Gift. A team led by an Indian-origin plastic surgeon from Dubai will perform free operations on children with cleft lips and acid burn victims in several villages near Nagpur in January.

According to a report, about 45 operations will be performed in two days by the group led by Dr Sanjay Parashar, a reputed plastic surgeon in Dubai. They will perform the surgeries in villages near Nagpur. The team comprises two plastic surgeons from Nagpur, a doctor from Australia and another specialist from Dubai.

Dr Parashar directs his earnings from cosmetic surgery — such as tummy tucks, liposuction and hair transplants — to treat needy villagers, the report said.

“I think it has become a passion. But I will always do reconstructive surgery for free because patients in India cannot afford it. It’s a good balance,” Dr Parashar said. He said most villagers just live with cleft lips because it involves four operations, depending on the severity. “They are left with a stigma because it affects their speech and eating,” he said.

“For a parent, it is traumatizing. It affects them psychologically, particularly if a child is born in a primary health care facility where people may not be aware of the condition,” Dr Parashar lamented.

CLEFT LIP:

Cleft lip and cleft palate are facial and oral malformations that occur very early in pregnancy, while the baby is developing inside the mother.  Clefting results when there is not enough tissue in the mouth or lip area, and the tissue that is available does not join together properly. A cleft lip is a physical split or separation of the two sides of the upper lip and appears as a narrow opening or gap in the skin of the upper lip. This separation often extends beyond the base of the nose and includes the bones of the upper jaw and/or upper gum.

Cleft lip and cleft palate can occur on one or both sides of the mouth. Because the lip and the palate develop separately, it is possible to have a cleft lip without a cleft palate, a cleft palate without a cleft lip, or both together. In most cases, the cause of cleft lip and cleft palate is unknown. These conditions cannot be prevented. Most scientists believe clefts are due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There appears to be a greater chance of clefting in a newborn if a sibling, parent, or relative has had the problem.

Another potential cause may be related to a medication a mother may have taken during her pregnancy. Some drugs may cause cleft lip and cleft palate.
