Dry fruit prices show sharp rise in city market

Nagpur News: Prices of dry fruits in Nagpur have been showing a sharp rise owing to various reasons. According to reports, harvest of cashew nuts, almonds, raisins, and other dry fruits registered a decline this year.

A kirana (grocery) trader said that new cashew, in great demand during marriage season, has started to flood city market and is fetching a good price compared to old harvest. The price of new cashew is showing Rs 200-300 more per box. But still there is shortage of cashew in market that may result in prices going higher in coming days, said the trader.

Apart from decline in harvest, the higher cost of production is also resulting in sharp rise in cashew prices, said another trader. Same is the situation of raisins. Only 40 percent of harvest of raisins was reaped this year. The less production was mainly due to untimely heavy rains that damaged the raisin crops. Now, the prices are showing Rs 50-60 higher per kilogram. The coming days hold no promise of dry fruit prices coming down.
