Nagpur: Dhirendra Shastri has issued a public apology after his recent remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj sparked widespread backlash across Maharashtra.
The controversy began following a statement made by Shastri during a public event in Nagpur, where he referred to Shivaji Maharaj and Samarth Ramdas. His comments were met with sharp criticism from various quarters, with many accusing him of disrespecting the Maratha icon.
In his clarification, Shastri stated that his words were “misinterpreted” and insisted that he holds Shivaji Maharaj in the highest regard.
“The idea of disrespecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj cannot even cross my mind. We draw inspiration for our vision of a Hindu nation from his legacy,” he said.
He added that if his statement had hurt anyone’s sentiments, he sincerely apologises.
Shastri further emphasized that Shivaji Maharaj’s contribution to protecting and promoting Hindutva remains unmatched, and every follower of Sanatan Dharma respects him deeply.
He also appealed for unity, warning that internal conflicts among followers would only benefit opposing forces.
Clarification on ‘Four Children’ Remark
Addressing another controversy, Shastri clarified his earlier statement urging people to have four children and dedicate one to the RSS. He said his remarks were symbolic.
“By saying one child should be given to the RSS, I meant that at least one child should grow up to be a committed nationalist with strong Sanatan values—whether as a civil servant or in any other role.”
Shastri urged people not to misinterpret his statements and reiterated that his intentions were rooted in promoting cultural and national values.
