Nagpur: A major tragedy was averted in the Kamptee area on Tuesday afternoon after a powerful gas cylinder explosion rocked a residential house, causing panic in the locality and extensive property damage.
According to preliminary information, the house belonged to Dilip Parlekar, a cook who prepares snacks such as samosas, batata vadas, and kachoris along with his sons, Sagar and Avinash. The family had been working on the second floor of the house since around 10 am. By 1 pm, they had completed preparing kachoris, after which Dilip and one of his sons left for Kamptee town to sell samosas.
At around 3 pm, a gas cylinder kept inside the house suddenly exploded with a loud blast. At the time of the incident, Sagar was present on the ground floor. Hearing the explosion, local residents rushed to the spot and managed to control the fire by dousing it with water. However, by then, a significant portion of household belongings had been reduced to ashes.
Fortunately, no one was present on the second floor at the time of the blast, preventing any loss of life. Police from Old Kamptee Police Station reached the spot soon after being alerted and have initiated an investigation into the incident.
The impact of the explosion was so intense that the cylinder shattered into 8 to 10 pieces, and window panes of nearby houses were also damaged. Initial estimates suggest that the property loss amounts to around Rs 50,000.
