
Nagpur: In a major crackdown on the illegal manufacture and sale of ‘kharra’ using rotten supari (areca nut), Nagpur Police have intensified action, arresting three accused in coordinated raids in the Kamptee police station limits.
Acting on specific inputs, the Crime Branch conducted raids at multiple locations in collaboration with the Food and Drugs Administration.
In the first operation at Jai Bhim Chowk on Kalamna Road in New Kamptee, police caught an accused named Fakirde red-handed while preparing kharra using a machine. In a second raid in the Yerkheda area, another accused named Amit was apprehended while manufacturing kharra using rotten supari. A third accused Niyaz Ahmed was detained from Ismailpura with a large stock of decomposed supari and a mixing machine used in the process.
During the raids, police seized five machines along with a substantial quantity of rotten supari used in the preparation of kharra.
In a separate action, one more accused Madhukar Mankar was arrested from Talpura in the Pardi police station area for possession of scented tobacco.
Officials have made it clear that illegal businesses endangering public health will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The police have vowed to continue such crackdowns in the coming days.
The operation, carried out by the Crime Branch’s Anti-Chain Snatching Squad, has sent shockwaves among illegal kharra operators. Authorities reiterated that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in activities harmful to public health.
