In a major policy change, Congress has decided to contest the forthcoming elections to five Graduates and Teachers constituencies for itself. The polls for five Graduates and Teachers constituencies of Maharashtra Legislative Council are scheduled to be held on July 19. Till now, Congress policy was to support a candidate of alliance partner or an organization besides contesting the Council polls itself.

The decision in this regard was taken in a meeting between Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and MPCC President Manikrao Thakre held on Thursday. According to this decision,  Congress will now field its own candidates for Pune Graduates, Pune Teachers, Nagpur Graduates, Amravati Teachers and Aurangabad Graduates constituencies of Maharashtra Legislative Council. A senior party leader for each constituency has been appointed as coordinator for selecting the candidates. The meeting of the coordinators will soon be called in this regard.

Others who attended the meeting include EGS Minister Nitin Raut and many senior party leaders besides the Chief Minister and MPCC President.
