Cong MLA Thakre demands action against NMC boss for collecting unlawful taxes

Thakre submitted a memorandum to Commissioner of Police

Nagpur: The Congress MLA from West Nagpur Vikas Thakre on Saturday submitted a memorandum to Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar demanding penal action against Nagpur Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B for allegedly cheating cthe citizens by way collecting various “unlawful” taxes since 2017 when the Goods and Service Tax (GST) came into force.

Thakre has demanded action against the NMC boss under Sections 409 (breach of trust by the government servant), 464 and 468 (forging of documents), 471 and 479 (using a fake document as genuine), 120B (conspiracy) and Section 420 (cheating).

The Congress MLA further claimed that since the GST came into force, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation had no businees in collecting various taxes from the citizens. However, thew NMC continued recovering taxes such Advertisement Tax, Local Body Tax (LBT), Property Tax, Water Tax and other taxes.

“As far as Advertisement Tax is concerned, the tax was incorporated in the GST. Hence, the NMC has no authority to collect this tax. But the local body still recovering the Advertisement Tax from the concerned persons in crores,” Thakre charged while addressing a press conference in Nagpur on Saturday.

Thakre has demanded the NMC to return tax money collected unlawfully to the duped citizens immediately.
