protest of ganga jamunaNagpur: Hundreds of citizens on Thursday hit the streets protesting against large scale prostitution and brothels being run in city’s Ganga-Jamuna area (Red Light area) with impunity despite hard-hitting strictures by Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court. The irate local residents, led by Corporator Abha Bijju Pande and Prashant Tannerwar, gathered at Chandrashekhar Azad Square on Central Avenue and staged ‘Rasta Roko’ agitation for full one hour.

Recently, the High Court had directed police and district administration to act tough against prostitution and brothels being run in Ganga-Jamuna area. However, because of lethargic attitude of the concerned authorities, the menace is thriving. Even the local MLA continuously neglected the issue despite several representations.

These factors ultimately resulted outrage among the residents who decided to resort to an intense agitation in the form of ‘Rasta Roko.’ The protesters raised slogans “Veshya Vyavasay Band Karo,” “Maharashtra Sarkar Hosh Me Aao,” “Ganga-Jamuna Hato, Bahu Beti Bachao,” etc. Abha Pande said that the ‘Rasta Roko’ is just a warning to Government. If no action is taken against prostitution then a full-scale agitation will be launched, warned Pande.

Those who participated in the agitation include Ravi Gudpalliwar, Madhukar Jhilpe, Datta Hivse, Pushpa Waghmare, Bhumika Gotaphode, Ratnamala Umredkar, Usha Kotpalliwar, Sarita Fukat, Manda Tannerwar, and other residents in large number.
