Nagpur: Winter’s grip over Vidarbha is steadily loosening, with minimum temperatures climbing across the region in the last week of January. Meteorological conditions indicate that night temperatures are likely to stay above normal, signalling a gradual fade-out of the season’s chill.
On Thursday, Nagpur recorded a minimum temperature of 16.9°C, while Gondia emerged as the coldest spot in Vidarbha at 14.0°C. Akola registered the warmest night at 19.7°C, followed by Chandrapur at 18.0°C. Other districts reported minimum temperatures hovering between 15.0°C and 17.7°C.
Explaining the shift, Regional Meteorological Centre scientist Dr Praveen Kumar said western disturbances originating in northern India have altered weather patterns over Central India. Residual cloud cover, in the form of medium to high clouds, is prevailing over Vidarbha, accompanied by easterly winds, conditions that are helping keep minimum temperatures above the seasonal average.
Dr Kumar noted that while a brief dip in night temperatures may be experienced for a day or two, it will be followed by a gradual rise. Overall, no major change in minimum temperatures is expected over the next five to six days, meaning residents are unlikely to experience intense cold. Meanwhile, the Met department has forecast light rainfall in parts of western Vidarbha, including Akola, Amravati and Buldhana, on February 2 and 3.
