Nagpur: A large number of ATMs across Nagpur have remained shut over the past few days, leaving residents running from one location to another in search of cash. Many machines were found either locked or displaying “No Cash” notices, causing frustration among people who depend on cash for their daily expenses.

Even at places where ATMs were recently refilled, customers reported technical issues. Several users said the machines issued slips showing messages such as “transaction declined” or “contact your branch,” forcing them to rush to bank branches for withdrawals.

A resident from Jaffar Nagar said he visited multiple ATMs in his area late at night but returned empty-handed as all of them were closed. A South Nagpur resident shared a similar experience, saying that despite having six to eight ATMs nearby, he often has to check two or three before finding one that is operational.

Residents say the problem has been persistent for several days, affecting small traders, daily wage workers and senior citizens the most, as they rely heavily on cash transactions. The few ATMs that remain functional often witness long queues, with cash getting exhausted quickly.

Bank officials, requesting anonymity, explained that each branch generally oversees around six ATMs in its surrounding area. With a shortage of staff, the tasks of cash replenishment and machine maintenance have largely been outsourced. However, supervising officials are often burdened with multiple responsibilities, leaving little time for regular inspection of the machines.

Senior citizens have also raised concerns about the lack of security guards at ATM kiosks and the absence of displayed helpline numbers for assistance during technical glitches.

Residents have urged banks to take immediate steps to ensure regular cash supply and proper maintenance of ATMs so that people do not face repeated inconvenience.
