The year has started on a rather ominous note for Bollywood’s lovebirds. Close on the heels of Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif and Farhan Akhtar-Adhuna Bhabani breakups comes the news of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli splitting up, ending a two-year courtship.
A source informed Mirror that while the 27-year-old actress is maintaining a stoic silence on the breakup, her former beau has made quite a spectacle of it. “All rumours about Virat trying to woo Anushka back are hogwash. He unfollowed her on Twitter and Instagram and then, uploaded, deleted and reuploaded a photograph of himself, originally captioned, `Heartbroken’,” revealed a source.
At actor Angad Bedi’s birthday party on Saturday, held at a five-star nightclub in the city, Virat was working the dance floor, greeting fellow revellers with, “I’m single, let’s dance”. An eyewitness at the bash informed Mirror that the 27-year-old cricketer was happy and, according to his close pals, “back to his natural, old self”.
Furthermore, a guest at the party revealed that Virat had been confiding in them that he was “cloistered around his controlling girlfriend”. They were spending little time together, with too much pressure on him to conform.
Meanwhile, Anushka has busied herself with work on the sets of her upcoming film with Salman Khan. She is also busy with three new productions that will roll out under her banner this year. Virat who opted out of the India-Sri Lanka Twenty-20 series to spend time with her was shocked to know that she had taken on all these projects. Virat was on leave till February 14 and wanted to ring in Valentine’s Day during the break. Anushka’s work plans caught him off guard. They have not been in touch for the last three weeks.
The news of the split has come as a shock to many as it was just two months ago, when Anushka, in a candid chat with Anupama Chopra, spoke about touring the World Cup and making appearances at cricket tournaments. “I am in a relationship with Virat and he wants me to come and watch him play and I want to watch him. Why the hell am I going to listen to anyone else? We are the same people actually, except that I don’t have that kind of aggression. He is emotionally driven, I am chilled out, and we both don’t want to become pawns. But sometimes, when I am in a stadium and Virat doesn’t do well, I wonder if I have done something wrong. I know that the cameras are on me… I’m great in front of the camera, so that’s ok, but I know that all those people are thinking, that it’s because of me,” she had said.
In November 2015, the couple, who had first met while shooting for a shampoo commercial in 2013, was clicked checking out a plush 5-BHK penthouse in Worli. Anushka’s father was a part of the house-hunt.
The trio was spotted dining at a Chinese joint later that day. Despite their obvious chemistry, the duo reportedly wanted different things from the relationship. “Virat proposed marriage around New Year’s Eve. Anushka rejected it, categorically stating that it would be better for them to focus on their careers instead. They are both young and have a long journey ahead of them,” added the source.
