The fact, the PDS wheat, rice, sugar and other stuff, is finding place at other shops of traders and in the weekly markets amply proves “Dal Me Kuch Kala Hai” or some shoddy deals are being carried out by all concerned for the very much obvious reasons (Easy money) courtesy total apathy by District Food Supply Department, again for very much obvious reasons.

Nagpur News: The much hyped and talked, specially by Ministers at both the State and Central levels, the Public Distribution System (PDS), most popularly called ration shops, has become a huge source of bounty for other traders, and even for ration shop owners, too.

According to sources, the PDS, specifically aimed at supplying food, like wheat, rice, sugar and other stuff, for poor or Below Poverty Line (BPL) at subsidized rates, are clandestinely being sold by other traders at very high rates. For example, the BPL card holders have been supplied wheat at Rs 5 a kilo, rice at Rs 6 a kilo, and even at Rs 2 a kilo through the Antodaya scheme.

Although hundreds of BPL card holders are availing the scheme, but the Government food is being shifted to other traders also by dubious means, and the traders are found selling the wheat in black market at Rs 20 a kilo after cleansing the somewhat inferior stuff to a good quality one. On the other hand, the ration shop owners, too, are found selling the food stuff at Rs 14 a kilo to customers who are not card holders and some other needy customers.

The black marketing and other “tricky deals” have been flourishing, and thriving, as neither the District Food Supply Officer nor the Tehsildar have made no efforts to stop this unhealthy deeds on the part of the PDS owners and the black marketers with a healthy hand.

The Government is honestly helping the poor class of society by way of making available food material at a very low cost through the District Food Supply Department. The quota of food stuff is supplied by Government’s agencies in accordance with the number of card holders of a particular PDS. However, the main sources of black marketing, the very ration shop owners, are indulging in dirty deals. The ration shop owners, it appears, must have been conniving with some District Food Supply Department officials and without fear pouring other traders with the food material specifically meant for poor. The tricky deal exposes another dubious act indulged in by ration shop owners. And that is: Refuse the subsidized food to some genuine BPL card holders, and sell the material to other traders with some margin of profit. The dirty deal could not be possible or carried out by the PDS owners if the quota of their ration shops is exhausted by supplying the food articles to all the genuine BPL card holders. Because the Government supplies food quota according to specific numbers of BPL card holders.
