The victim youth identified as Rahul Gopalrao Khokle aged 28 years and a resident of Umred Road, Dighori Naka, Nagpur had gone to meet a friend of his in Gyaneshwar Nagar. However, some of his rival gang members gave a tip off about his arrival in the area.

The victim was collecting some funds from the residents of the Dighori Naka for celebrating Hanuman Jayanti. When he had gone to meet his friend, after having his dinner at around 1 am from Mominpura on March 31, 2015, the rival gang members whom the cops identified as Manish Tomaskar aged 28 years and Ritesh Tomaskar aged 30 years and resident of Aradhana Society, Besa Road, Nagpur along with some four other accused attacked Rahul Khokle with knives, sticks and stones in an attempt to kill him.
