Another case of dowry death in the city

Nagpur: One often wonders that does social evils like Dowry still exists? Well it seems it does exist and lifts its ugly head every now and then. In another case that came to fore, a girl who was married into a family that was constantly harassed with a demand for dowry by the in-laws. The dowry demanded was allegedly for construction of their house and for the marriage of the younger brother in-law.

According to police sources, the deceased is identified as Shushma Sachin Yadav aged 27 years and a resident of Yogendra Nagar Gittikhadan (in-laws house) was allegedly pressurized and continuously harassed by the in-laws with a demand for dowry that she committed suicide on May 19, 2016 between 11:00 am to 12:40 pm.

The accused all residents of Yogendra Nagar Gittikhadan are identified as

  1. Sachin Ramesh Yadav (Husband) aged 30 years
  2. Sharda Ramesh Yadav (Mother-in-law) aged 60 years
  3. Pankaj Ramesh Yadav (Brother-in-law) aged 26 years
  4. Sonu Ramesh Yadav (Brother-in-law) aged 25 years

The sister of the deceased Shushma Yadav, identified as Ritu Dhanraj aged 30 years and a resident of Plot No 41, Gorewada Uttan Nagar, Welcome Society, Mankapur in her complaint to the Gittikhadan Police Station alleged that her sister Shushma Yadav was continuously harassed physically and mentally with a demand to get dowry of two lakhs from her home since they (in-laws) wanted to construct their house and also to get the younger brother-in-law married.

When Shushma Yadav refused to trouble her parents with the dowry amount, they made her life difficult in the house and forced her to commit suicide.

On the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim’s sister, the Gittikhadan Police Station has registered a case of dowry harassment under Section 304 (B) and 34 of Indian Penal Code against the in-laws family and has initiated an investigation into the matter.
