All-india gold cup Football tournament: Lucknow Army make it to final

Nagpur News: Lucknow Army edged Nagpur Blues 1(4)-1(3)in a penalty shootout to book a berth in the final of the All India Gold Cup Football Tournament at Military ground in Kamptee, on Saturday.

The penalty shootout was marked by brilliant goalkeeping from the Lucknow goalkeeper who saved attempts from Hardik Kanojiya and Mohd. Faiyaz. Gurjeet Singh was off the mark for Lucknow in the shootout but the saves made by his teammate were enough to see the team through at a scoreline of 4-3.

Earlier in the match, Lucknow drew first blood through Manish Singh in the stoppage time of the first half. A late equaliser from Shahbaz Pathan in the 82nd minute delayed his team’s exit for some time. A very physical battle was witnessed throughout the match as the referee had to draw several yellow cards and a red card too towards the dying moments of the match.

Sandeep Tahewar of Blues was sent off in the 89th minute as his team had to defend with 10 men in the last few minutes. But they hung on, only to be knocked out in the shootout.

The final will be played between Lucknow Army and Garhwal Rifle on Sunday at 3 p.m.
