Nagpur: Tension ran high in Second Capital of the State on Sunday, after a patient with foreign travel history tested positive for Omicron variant of novel Coronavirus (Covid-19).

According to sources, the male patient had travelled to city from West Africa. Following which his samples were sent for genome sequencing. His report came positive for Omicron variant of Covid-19, sources confirmed.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) had sent 15 samples of Covid-positive patients to NIV Pune, including two more international flyers. So far, the result of only one has been conveyed to the local administration and AIIMS Nagpur.

The man had a negative RT-PCR report when he reached Delhi but had tested Covid positive at Nagpur airport. He was allowed to go to his residence at Dighori but NMC shifted him to AIIMS Nagpur when his report returned positive.

He is asymptomatic since the day of admission to AIIMS Nagpur’s special ward, where a 39-year-old woman and her nine-year-old daughter too are admitted following their travel to UK.
The Dighori resident is unvaccinated. He had tested positive for Covid in April and left the city for Africa in June after a negative RT-PCR. His Covid infection history prevented him to get vaccinated then, the civic chief said.

An RT-PCR test will be done on his 10th day of infection, that is December 14. If he tests negative, he would be allowed to go home. His family members were also tested and found negative.
