Nagpur: Dreaded absconding gangster Sumit Thakur, wanted in assault and arson cases, was nabbed by Crime Branch of Nagpur Police in Dhamangaon Town of Amravati District. Cops, in a well-planned operation, arrested the fugitive on Thursday (Oct 8) with the help of local police. The gangster’s arrest was matter of time as two members of his gang, Amit Thakur, brother of Sumit, and Nilesh Uike, were apprehended on Tuesday from the pilgrimage town of Shirdi. The arrested two members tipped off the Crime Branch about whereabouts of mastermind Sumit Thakur that resulted in his nabbing from Dhamangaon.
Notably, Sumit Thakur himself and his gang members, were involved in attack on Gittikhadan-based Prof Malhari Mhaske over old rivalry. Prof Mhaske’s car was torched and he was threatened of dire consequences by Sumit Thakur and his gang. Since the violent actions, Sumit Thakur and his henchmen went absconding. Crime Branch had dispatched squads to Raipur, Betul, Gondia, Wardha, Mumbai, Nasik and other cities to apprehend the wanted mastermind. But the cops were not getting any clues over whereabouts of Sumit Thakur as the gangster changed his hideouts frequently. However, the lady luck deserted Sumit Thakur when Crime Branch sleuths on Thursday hit success that the fugitive had taken shelter at a known person’s house in Dhamangaon. With this information under their sleeves, the cops got themselves activated and planned an operation. A crack team of five officials and policemen reached Dhamangaon and dug out information on Sumit Thakur’s hideout. The cops stumbled over information that a person named Atul Shirbhate (34), resident of Mira Chhangani Nagar, near Swami Samarth Mandir, Dhamangaon, was in contact with the gangster. The cops immediately stormed the place but could not find Sumit Thakur. Not dejected by the failure, the Crime Branch team with extraordinary efforts gathered another information and this time tasted success. The squad nabbed the wanted gangster from a slum in Dhamangaon. When the arrested gangster was brought to Nagpur in the morning of Friday, the DCP Deepali Masirkar and other officials briefed media about the success at a press conference.
The DCP Masirkar told media that Sumit Thakur was roaming in one town to another by dodging the police but the arrest of his brother Amit Thakur and Nilesh Uike paved the way for a successful operation. The crack team of Crime Branch that arrested the gangster includes Police Inspectors Ravindra Patil, Girish Tathod, APIs Narendra Powar, Gokul Suryavanshi, Dinesh Dahatonde, Sachin Lule, Constables Rajesh Thakur, Prashant Deshmukh, Dayashankar Bisandre, Manjit Thakur and Rakesh Yadav.
