Ankit Tiwari, the singer who swept the nation last year with his heartfelt rendition of “sun raha hai naa tu” from Aashiqui 2 and instantly became rage among soulful music lovers has been caught in controversy. His girlfriend, a mother of 7 year old, has charged him with raping her on many occasions after promising her marriage.
Ankit Tiwari was Thursday arrested by Mumbai police on charges of allegedly raping his former girlfriend and remanded to police custody till May 12.
“Ankit has been arrested and presented before the court, which remanded him to police custody till May 12,” his lawyer Nagesh Mishra said. Tiwari’s brother Ankur was also arrested but it could not be ascertained whether he has also been charged with rape or with threats to assault the victim.
The victim had met Ankit through a common friend. Sources said Ankit had gone to the birthday party of the woman’s sister. He made the woman drink and allegedly called her in private room for some discussion. There he forced himself upon her on the promise of marriage. A month later when Ankit again went to her house, her sister confronted her and asked whether he would marry the woman. Ankit then went into the house’s temple and brought the vermillion to put in the partition of the woman’s hair.
“Ankit has not been in touch with the girl since one year and before that he was in a relationship with her for a couple of years,” said Mishra.
“He has been accused of rape and molestation under sections 376 (rape), 417 (cheating) and 493 (cohabitation by a man deceitfully inducing a belief of lawful marriage) of the IPC (Indian Penal Code),” he added.
