Nagpur: The South-West Nagpur unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that undertook a week-long desilting drive to clean Sonegaon Lake to mark 60th birthday of Union Minister for Road, Transport, Shipping Nitin Gadkari has removed 4600 truck load of silt from the lake. The desilting drive which began on May 21 ended on Sunday. A total of approximately 23,000 cu.m silt was removed from the historical lake. Five Poclain machines, 4 JCB machines and 40 trucks were deployed in the massive exercise.
Addressing media on Monday, Sandip Joshi, Ruling Party leader in NMC, said that Ground Water Experts Chetan Gajbhiye and Singare surveyed the lake and provided technical guidance to the BJP activists in desilting of Sonegaon lake. .
Joshi further said that the Mayor Nanda Jichkar and Standing Committee Chairman Sandeep Jadhav have announced a provision of Rs 2 crore in NMC’s budget for the beautification of this lake. Similarly, Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has also also announced financial help of Rs five crore from the Government fund for the beautification of lake. “The desilting of the lake will improve its ground water level, and also recharge its natural resources to store maximum water in coming monsoon. This will increase the ground water level in the entire area,” Joshi said and added that he has urged the citizens to implement rain water harvesting system in every house and flat scheme to fight with water scarcity.
Joshi said, “We have decided to paint a wall from Sahakar Nagar Ghat to H B Estate with slogans based on save water, protect environment to save future. The desilting drive will continue in the next two years to rejuvenate water body.”
