Nagpur: Under mounting pressure from elected representatives, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Enforcement Department launched a sweeping anti-encroachment crackdown across key city zones on Thursday, exposing years of unchecked illegal occupation of roads and footpaths.

The sudden, large-scale operation comes immediately after corporators cornered the administration in a recent general body meeting, questioning the apparent inaction against rampant encroachments choking Nagpur’s busiest stretches.

In Dharampeth Zone, joint enforcement teams moved in aggressively, dismantling illegal stalls and makeshift shops that had virtually taken over both sides of roads and pedestrian pathways, from the zone office to Sitabuldi Main Road, extending up to Variety Square. Large quantities of goods, particularly clothing materials, were seized on the spot.

Simultaneously, coordinated action unfolded in Gandhibagh zone, targeting some of the most congested commercial pockets including Mahal Chowk, Badkas Chowk, areas around the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue, Kalyaneshwar Temple, Kelibagh Road and Ayachit Mandir.

Another squad, covering Dharampeth and Dhantoli zones, cleared encroachments from a wide urban stretch, VCA Ground to the Collectorate, Civil Lines (near Bata), areas around the NMC headquarters, Mominpura, Bhavan’s School, Sitabuldi Metro Station, Lokmat Square, Rahate Colony and Jhansi Rani Square.

Officials confirmed that nearly a full truckload of confiscated material was collected during the drive, underlining the scale of encroachments that had mushroomed over time.

Special focus was placed on sensitive areas such as Rajwada Palace and Haj House, where encroachments were cleared keeping in mind the movement and arrangements for the upcoming Haj pilgrimage.

Reactive action or sustained crackdown?

The operation was carried out under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner (Enforcement) Mangesh Khawle, Assistant Commissioner Sanjay Kamble, and Deputy Engineer Udaysingh Khandate.

However, the timing of the drive has raised a critical question: Would this action have taken place without political pressure?

For years, illegal vendors and structures have steadily occupied public spaces, turning footpaths into marketplaces and roads into bottlenecks. Thursday’s action, though extensive, now puts the spotlight on whether this is a one-time reaction, or the beginning of sustained enforcement.

For Nagpur’s commuters and pedestrians, the answer will determine whether reclaimed spaces remain public, or quietly slip back into encroachment.
