Nagpur: In a heart-wrenching incident that has left Nagpur police force in shock, a 45-year-old head constable allegedly ended his life following a prolonged and bitter dispute with his wife over the custody of their two young children. His body was found floating in the waters of Ambazari Lake on Tuesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Shilratna Bhimrao Belekar (45), a resident of Waghdara, Isasani, who was posted at Pratap Nagar Police Station. Belekar, described by colleagues as a disciplined and soft-spoken officer, had been battling intense personal turmoil for the past two months.

According to police sources, Belekar was embroiled in a serious family dispute with his wife, primarily over the custody of their two children, a son studying in Std VIII and a daughter in Std IV. The children were residing with him, a situation that reportedly led to frequent arguments and mounting emotional strain. Those close to him said the ongoing tension had deeply affected his mental state.
Belekar had been absent from duty since February 19, raising concerns among his colleagues. On Sunday afternoon, he visited his elder brother, Ajay Bhimrao Belekar (49), at his residence in Kamgar Colony. After spending some time there, he quietly left the house. It was the last time his family saw him alive.
When he failed to return home or contact anyone, anxiety gripped the family. Ajay subsequently lodged a missing person complaint at Pratap Nagar Police Station, hoping for his safe return.
Tragedy unfolded on Tuesday morning when morning walkers at Ambazari Lake noticed a body floating in the lake and alerted the police. Officers from Ambazari Police Station rushed to the spot. An identity card recovered from the deceased’s pocket confirmed that it was Belekar. His brother was immediately informed and later identified the body.
The sudden and tragic end of a serving police officer has sent shockwaves through the department and the local community. Police have registered a case of accidental death, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the extreme step.
The incident once again highlights the silent emotional battles many individuals endure behind closed doors, even those entrusted with maintaining law and order.
