Nagpur: Maharashtra is experiencing an early surge in heat, with winter conditions virtually disappearing by mid-February. According to the India Meteorological Department, maximum temperatures across the state are likely to rise by another 2-3°C over the next 24 hours, intensifying heat conditions, especially in Vidarbha and Marathwada.

Over the past few days, several regions have already recorded maximum temperatures above 37°C. While mornings remain mildly cool, afternoons are turning harsh, making outdoor activity increasingly uncomfortable. Vidarbha-known for extreme summer heat—often records temperatures exceeding 45°C in March, with cities like Nagpur, Chandrapur, and Akola frequently topping the charts. With summer arriving early this year, weather experts warn of possible new temperature records.

On February 19, dry and summer-like conditions are expected to persist across most parts of the state. In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region-including Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and the Konkan coast-heat combined with high humidity will increase discomfort. Mumbai’s maximum temperature is forecast to remain between 34°C and 36°C, with minimums around 22–24°C. Humidity will make afternoons particularly oppressive, even if mornings and evenings feel relatively milder.

In Western Maharashtra, a brief morning chill may be felt, but it is unlikely to last. Daytime temperatures are expected to climb to 35-37°C, especially in open and dry regions. Vidarbha and Marathwada will remain the hottest zones, with Marathwada recording 36-38°C and Vidarbha touching 38–39°C in some locations. Minimum temperatures are expected to range between 16-21°C.

Overall, the heat curve across Maharashtra is steadily rising, with signs that even morning coolness will fade further in the coming days. Experts advise residents to avoid peak afternoon sun, stay well hydrated, protect the head while outdoors, and wear light, loose clothing to reduce heat stress.
