Nagpur, : Water is not just essential for life; it is also a symbol of health and dignity. However, when water reaches homes through illegal means, it brings along several risks and concerns. Many residents in Nagpur’s settlements had been facing this reality. But times are changing. Due to the awareness campaign undertaken by Orange City Water (OCW), a new wave is emerging in the city; citizens are voluntarily giving up illegal water connections and opting for authorised, legal ones.
In some parts of the city, residents were using illegal water connections due to lack of information or unintentionally. While this may have appeared convenient, it carried serious risks such as sewage contamination, leading to potentially life-threatening diseases. Moreover, since they were not authorised consumers, these residents were deprived of municipal support during technical issues. This was not merely a water supply issue but a serious threat to family health. Regularisation of water connections has now brought a positive change in the lives of Nagpur’s citizens.
Freedom from Sewage Contamination
Swati Pravin Lanjewar from Ashinagar Zone recalls her ordeal: “We were receiving water mixed with sewage,” she says. The mixing of sewage with drinking water was a major concern for her family. She approached OCW and lodged a complaint. With the installation of a new pipeline, her household now receives a supply of clean and safe drinking water.
Satisfaction of Twice-a-Day Water Supply
Rajaram Parate from Sataranjipura Zone shares his experience: “Now we receive clean water twice a day. Most importantly, I am satisfied because the billing is as per the meter.” Transparency and reliability have emerged as key benefits of having a legal water connection.
End to the Struggle for Water
Sharing a similar sentiment, Mr Georgie Panna, also from Sataranjipura Zone, said, “There were many water-related problems in this area earlier, but now they have been completely resolved.”
By opting for authorised connections, citizens are not just receiving water but also gaining a protective ‘safety net’ that ensures better health and service assurance. Benefits include a 24/7 help centre, faster grievance redressal, and regular mobile updates on water supply and repair works.
NMC–OCW has appealed to citizens to act responsibly and use only legal water connections. This step is important not only for the well-being of individual families but also for strengthening the city’s overall public health system.
