Nagpur: In a disturbing case that has sparked outrage, a school principal and a teacher have been booked for allegedly brutalising a Class 7 girl student inside a private school in the Yashodhara Nagar police station limits, raising serious questions over child safety within educational institutions.
The incident reportedly occurred at Raj Gawai Public School in Sangharsh Nagar, where the minor girl was allegedly physically assaulted for a trivial reason. The complaint was filed by Mangala Tembhurne, a counsellor with the Child Helpline under the District Child Protection Unit.
According to the complaint, the episode unfolded on January 22 when the student merely asked her classmate for a mirror. This reportedly enraged a teacher identified as Tasleem, who allegedly thrashed the girl mercilessly and forced both students to stand outside the classroom as a form of public humiliation.
The ordeal allegedly worsened when the girl was later summoned to the principal’s cabin. The school Principal, Nasreen Akhtar, is accused of assaulting the minor with an iron ruler, allegedly reprimanding her for “disobeying” school authorities. The use of a metal object to punish a child has been termed shocking and unacceptable.
Traumatised, the girl narrated the incident to her parents after returning home. The parents initially approached the school management, demanding strict action against the staff involved. However, the school allegedly failed to take any corrective steps, forcing the family to seek intervention from the District Child Protection Unit.
Taking cognisance of the complaint, Yashodhara Nagar Police registered an offence against the principal and the teacher. The case has once again brought the spotlight on unchecked corporal punishment and abuse of authority in schools, with child rights activists demanding stringent action to ensure such incidents are not repeated.
