Nagpur: Geeta Sushil Hinge, women’s wing leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction), died in a road accident late Sunday night on the Nagpur-Gadchiroli Highway near Pachgaon. She was 53, police said.
According to police, Hinge was travelling to Gadchiroli after completing work in Nagpur when a speeding vehicle attempting to overtake rammed into her car from behind around 12:30 am. The impact left her with severe head injuries, resulting in her death on the spot. Her husband, Sushil Hinge, and the driver sustained serious injuries and were admitted to a private hospital in Nagpur.
Before joining NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), Hinge had held several key posts in another political party, including district women’s wing secretary and district president. She quit the party following disagreements during municipal elections and later joined the Ajit Pawar-led faction, where she was appointed State Vice-President of the women’s wing.
Known for her strong presence in social and political spheres, Hinge had mentored several women activists in the region. She also headed Aadhar Vishva Foundation, through which she actively engaged in social work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she organised the distribution of cooked meals to patients and personally assisted in performing last rites for victims whose families were unable to do so.
Her death has sparked widespread grief across Gadchiroli, where she was regarded as a prominent and compassionate public figure.
