Nagpur: The Second Capital is gearing up for a turbulent week ahead as the Winter Session of the Maharashtra Legislature begins on December 8. More than 52 morchas, accompanied by dharnas, hunger strikes, and even self-immolation threats, are scheduled across the city between December 8 and 14, reflecting rising public anger over multiple unresolved issues.

According to government data, the city will witness:

These demonstrations will highlight demands related to employment opportunities, restoration of the old pension scheme, rehabilitation of project-affected families, tribal rights, farmers’ issues, social justice concerns, and alleged bureaucratic apathy.

Day-by-day protest line-up

Protests will peak mid-week, with major gatherings planned throughout:

Labour Unions Take Lead

Labour organisations will stage the highest number of agitations with:

21 morchas
9 dharnas
6 hunger strikes
1 self-immolation attempt
Alongside them, RPI factions, tribal groups, student organisations, and farmers’ bodies will launch independent protests. Farmers and students are scheduled to take out two morchas each.

Self-Immolation Threats Trigger Alarm

Authorities are particularly concerned after two farmers from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and a representative of Anna Hazare Vichar Manch from Gadchiroli issued notices of self-immolation on December 9 over alleged land record fraud.

Dharnas concentrated at key city spots

Major agitation points include Yeshwant Stadium and Dhantoli, where several organisations will stage sit-ins, including:

Maharashtra State Dhobi Service Board
Graduate Part-Time Employees’ Association
Old Pension Scheme supporters
School teachers, engineers, OBC activist groups
Domestic workers’ unions
Farmers’ bodies
Traffic & Security Alert

Most protest marches will proceed from Yashwant Stadium via Tekdi Road, Morris College T-Point and LIC Square, likely causing severe traffic disruptions. Police are preparing heavy bandobast, traffic diversions, and barricading as thousands are expected to join the demonstrations.

As the Winter Session opens, Nagpur is set to become the epicentre of statewide dissent — with citizens determined to make their voices heard on streets rather than inside the legislature.
