Nagpur: Nagpur’s political scene rattled as Salil Deshmukh, son of former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, resigns from Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction
The dust of upcoming local body elections is still in the air, and Nagpur has already witnessed a major jolt. The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar faction) has suffered a significant setback after Salil Deshmukh — son of senior leader and former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh — resigned from the party’s primary membership.
His sudden exit has sparked intense chatter across political circles, with many calling it a serious blow to Sharad Pawar’s camp. Though Salil Deshmukh did not hold any major organisational post, he had contested the recent Assembly elections from the Katol constituency just six months ago. His father had personally pushed for his candidacy, after which the party granted him the ticket. The contest was heated, prestige-heavy, and ended with Salil Deshmukh’s defeat in a nail-biting battle.
Now, his abrupt resignation has raised eyebrows and triggered a fresh round of speculation. Speaking at a press conference today, Salil Deshmukh stated that he is stepping down due to health reasons. Yet, political observers believe his departure could hamper the party’s prospects in the ongoing Nagar Panchayat and Nagar Parishad elections.
The key question now is whether the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) will attempt to persuade him to reconsider. Will he be offered a key responsibility to stage a comeback? The coming days will reveal which direction this political tremor settles into, and whether the party can contain the aftershocks.
