Nagpur Police finally cracked the rising surge of moped thefts in the city after Crime Branch officers arrested notorious thief Rishabh Asopa from an OYO hotel in Dighori. Rishabh, who was out on bail, was caught enjoying a stay with his girlfriend when the police team raided the room and took him into custody.
Investigators say Rishabh wasted no time after stepping out of jail. Within just 10–12 days, he teamed up with his brother Ritik Asopa and a minor accomplice to steal 13 mopeds across different parts of Nagpur. During questioning, he confessed to all the thefts. Police later recovered all 13 stolen vehicles from various locations linked to the gang.
The breakthrough came after CCTV footage surfaced in the recent theft of an Activa belonging to Sapna Bhojwani of Lakadganj. The same suspects had earlier been linked to the disappearance of another two-wheeler owned by Ramesh Donarkar. The pattern brought the Crime Branch’s attention back to the Asopa brothers, who are suspected to have stolen more than 50 mopeds so far.
The raid at the OYO hotel revealed a troubling pattern: the brothers allegedly used money from the stolen mopeds to splurge on girlfriends and fund their expensive lifestyle. Police also learned they forged Aadhaar cards to sell the vehicles quickly and avoid detection.
During questioning, Rishabh’s girlfriend claimed she had no knowledge of his criminal activities, though police say Rishabh was known to have multiple girlfriends.
The case, along with the recovered mopeds and the prime accused, has now been handed over to Lakadganj Police Station for further action. The search for Ritik Asopa and the minor accomplice continues.
Stories like this remind us how a city’s undercurrent can quickly shift when one small thread is pulled.
