Chain-snatcher arrested; stolen gold recovered in Nagpur

Nagpur: In a swift breakthrough, the Crime Branch’s Anti-Chain Snatching Squad has arrested a 25-year-old man involved in a daylight robbery in the Pachpaoli police area and recovered stolen gold ornaments and other valuables worth Rs 82,000.

According to police, on November 1, 2025, around 12.30 pm, complainant Asha Vinayak Sangoḷe (59), a resident of Plot No. 181, Kashi Nagar, Nari Road, Kapil Nagar, Nagpur, had alighted from an auto at Indora Chowk and was walking towards a clinic when the incident occurred. Near Bridge No. 10 Chowk, in front of an HP petrol pump, an unidentified person riding an Activa scooter came from behind and snatched her mangalsutra weighing about 3 grams and valued at Rs 15,000, before fleeing the spot.

Based on her complaint, Pachpaoli Police registered a case under Section 392 of the BNS for robbery.

During a parallel investigation, the Crime Branch’s Anti-Chain Snatching Squad conducted a technical probe and, acting on reliable information, laid a trap and apprehended the accused, identified as Rahul Ashok Chavan (25), a resident of Plot No. 17, Bapuji Aney Nagar, Yashodharanagar, Nagpur.

During interrogation, Chavan confessed to the crime. Police seized from him a gold pendant with beads, a mobile phone, and the Activa scooter (MH-40 AH 9202) used in the offence, all valued at Rs 82,000.

The accused and the seized property have been handed over to Pachpaoli Police for further investigation.

This successful operation was carried out under the guidance of Ravindra Kumar Singal, Commissioner of Police, Nagpur City; Navinchandra Reddy, Joint Commissioner of Police; Vasant Pardeshi, Additional CP (Crime); Rahul Maknikar, DCP (Detection); and Abhijeet Patil, ACP (Crime Branch). The action was executed by the Anti-Chain Snatching Squad led by Woman API Mangala Harde and her team.
