Nagpur: A shocking case of alleged police brutality surfaced in Nagpur after a 65-year-old fruit vendor, Mohammad Farooq, was reportedly beaten by Traffic Police Inspector Sanjay Khandare, resulting in a ruptured eardrum. The incident occurred on Sunday, November 3, 2025, near Dahi Bazaar Flyover, when Farooq, a jam and sitaphal (custard apple) seller, stopped to attend to a customer on his way home.

According to eyewitnesses, PI Khandare allegedly struck Farooq twice on his ear, causing him to collapse in pain. When Farooq’s son questioned the officer, he was verbally abused and threatened. Local residents rushed the injured man to Mayo Hospital, where doctors confirmed a torn eardrum after an ENT examination.

Farooq’s family then reached out to Nagpur City Minority President Wasim Khan, who immediately visited the hospital. When doctors at Khidmat Hospital couldn’t provide ENT treatment, Khan accompanied the family to Shantinagar Police Station to lodge a complaint. Initially, duty officers reportedly hesitated to register the FIR and allegedly pressured the family to withdraw the case.

Sources claim the officer on duty offered to arrange an apology from PI Khandare, citing “pressure from above.” Wasim Khan refused, stating that “an elderly man was assaulted, his fruits thrown, and his son abused — this cannot be settled with an apology.” After persistent efforts, the statement was finally recorded around 4 AM, though police said the FIR would be filed after the injury report was received.

On November 4, Khan and the victim’s family met DCP Rahul Madane, who assured them of a fair and strict inquiry into the incident. Following the meeting, Farooq underwent further treatment at a private hospital, where doctors confirmed internal ear damage and blood clots. Medical experts informed the family that recovery could take up to eight months, with surgery ruled out due to the victim’s age.

The injury report is expected to be submitted to the police within two days. Meanwhile, community members have demanded a transparent investigation and disciplinary action against the officer involved, emphasizing that no citizen — especially a senior — should face such violence from those tasked with public safety.
