Nagpur: Elderly man duped of 1.08 crore in online share trading fraud

Nagpur: The Nagpur Cyber Police have launched a probe into a major online share trading fraud in which a 61-year-old resident of Congress Nagar was duped of over Rs 1 crore. Acting swiftly on the complaint, police have already frozen a portion of the defrauded money and initiated a detailed technical investigation.

According to police sources, the complainant alleged that a group of unidentified cyber fraudsters lured him with promises of high returns through online share trading. The accused convinced him to invest through various bank accounts and mobile numbers, collecting a total of around Rs 1.08 crore. However, after receiving the funds, they neither returned the principal amount nor provided any profit.

Police have identified 78 mobile number holders and bank account operators as suspects. A special cyber cell team is currently analyzing digital trails to trace the network behind the scam.

Sources revealed that the victim, who had previously worked abroad, was first contacted by the fraudsters in September. They persuaded him to join a WhatsApp group dedicated to “profitable” trading schemes and even shared fake success stories to gain his trust. He was later sent a link to a trading app, where his account falsely displayed a profit of Rs 4 crore.

When the victim attempted to withdraw the amount, the scammers gave evasive responses and eventually stopped communicating altogether. Realizing he had been duped, he approached Dhantoli Police Station, from where the case was transferred to the Cyber Police Station for further investigation.

Police suspect the racket to be part of a larger organized cyber fraud network operating across multiple states. Investigations are ongoing.
