Nagpur Police launch pre-poll crackdown; over 300 goons externed from city

Nagpur: Even before the first election banner has gone up, Nagpur Police have swung into action to ensure peaceful civic elections. In a sweeping crackdown over the past ten months, as many as 304 criminals have been externed from the city limits.

According to police officials, the move comes as a preventive measure against possible disruptions during the election period. White-collar offenders, gambling rackets, and local goons are known to become increasingly active during polls, often threatening law and order and intimidating voters. Determined to maintain peace, the police have decided to act firmly from the outset this year.

Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal had recently directed all Zonal Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) to compile updated dossiers of habitual offenders. Surveillance teams have been deployed to keep discreet tabs on their movements. The externment orders have mainly targeted repeat offenders and gang members involved in serious or recurring crimes.

Under this preventive measure, offenders are ordered to stay out of city limits for a fixed duration, ranging from a few days during major festivals or events to as long as two years. Before the final order, a show-cause notice is issued to the accused, who is given an opportunity to respond. The concerned DCP then reviews the case before passing the externment order.

Among all zones, Zone One recorded the highest action, externing 140 criminals, while Zone Five followed with 78 externments for periods between one and two years. Other zones, too, have undertaken strong measures to curb criminal activities in their respective jurisdictions.

With these proactive steps, the Nagpur Police aim to send a clear message — lawlessness will not be tolerated as the city heads into a crucial election season.
