Maharashtra Lawyers to Wear Red Ribbons, Demand Advocate Protection Bill

Nagpur: The Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa has condemned the rising number of attacks on lawyers across the state and announced a state-wide peaceful protest on Monday, November 3. As part of the protest, all advocates will wear red ribbons while attending court proceedings, symbolizing solidarity and demanding the immediate enactment of the long-pending Advocate Protection Bill.

The decision was made during the Council’s general meeting held on October 29, following a series of violent incidents targeting members of the legal fraternity. In one of the most shocking recent cases at Shevgaon, a lawyer was brutally assaulted during cross-examination by individuals angered by his line of questioning, leading to widespread outrage among lawyers.

According to a statement from the Bar Council, a draft of the Advocate Protection Bill was circulated among bar associations across Maharashtra for feedback. Many associations submitted their recommendations, and the revised draft has since been forwarded to the Advocate General. However, despite repeated appeals, the state government has yet to take concrete action.

While Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has previously assured that the bill is under consideration, the Bar Council emphasized that continued attacks on lawyers demand immediate legislative intervention.

Bar Council Secretary Advocate Sharad Bagul, in an official release, urged all district and taluka bar associations to actively participate in Monday’s protest and wear red ribbons as a collective mark of dissent. The Council reiterated that this symbolic action is not merely a protest but a call to protect the dignity and safety of those upholding justice.

The legal community hopes the government will treat the matter with the urgency it deserves and bring the Advocate Protection Bill into force without further delay.
