Nagpur: In a major pre-election push, the Maharashtra Government has sanctioned Rs 315 crore for a range of development projects across Nagpur city. The Urban Development Department (UDD) released the funds to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to expedite long-pending infrastructure works, including the development of footpaths, gardens, streetlights, sewage lines, and other civic amenities.
The move comes ahead of the much-anticipated civic elections, likely to be held between December and January, and is seen as a significant financial boost for the cash-strapped civic body. The State Government issued two separate Government Resolutions (GRs), one for Rs 175 crore and another for Rs 140 crore, to cover the list of projects proposed by NMC.
For months, NMC had been struggling to execute key projects due to a severe funds crunch. Despite its best efforts to sustain the city’s infrastructure momentum, its limited revenue base hampered progress. Anticipating growing urban needs, NMC had recently submitted a detailed proposal to the State Government seeking financial assistance.
Officials said the fresh infusion of funds will be primarily utilized to replace ageing pipelines, upgrade sewage and drinking water supply networks, enhance streetlighting systems, and improve public gardens and toilets. A significant portion of the funds will be directed toward strengthening the sewage network in North Nagpur and addressing persistent traffic and infrastructure bottlenecks in the western parts of the city.
Key development works proposed:
• Improvement of streets in Dharampeth and Shankar Nagar under the Healthy Street Project
• Beautification of Police Line Takli and Naik Talao areas
• Creation of a Rock Garden at Mahatma Phule Garden, Suyog Nagar
• Small-scale garden works in East Nagpur
• Construction of a protective wall along a nullah in Imambada
• Beautification drives in Hudkeshwar and Narsala
• Development of Renuka Mata Mandir Sanstha premises
• Construction of a multipurpose hall at Nagpur Vyayamshala, Mahal
• Establishment of e-libraries at Corporation Colony, Jagnath Budhwari, Lendi Talao, Mominpura, and Baripura Square
• Construction of a Samaj Bhavan at Thakkargram
• Development initiatives across South West and West Nagpur Assembly segments
With this allocation, NMC expects to accelerate long-stalled projects and enhance the city’s urban landscape before the civic elections. However, civic sources point out that while the amount is substantial, it remains modest compared to the broader funding needs of government-backed projects awaiting execution due to financial constraints.
