CM Fadnavis urges Bachchu Kadu, farmers to end protest, join talks

Nagpur/Pune: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday came down heavily on Bachchu Kadu and his supporters for disrupting public life with highway blockades in Nagpur instead of joining discussions with the government.

Speaking to reporters in Pune after attending a NITI Aayog event, Fadnavis said that while the government was ready for dialogue on the demands raised by Kadu’s Prahar organisation, the agitators had chosen confrontation over conversation.

“Bachchu Kadu has raised several demands that need a proper roadmap for resolution. A meeting was called to discuss them, but he and his team refused to attend and sent a message at midnight,” Fadnavis said.

The Chief Minister strongly criticised Tuesday’s protests in which Kadu’s supporters, including some specially-abled persons, blocked the Nagpur-Hyderabad Highway and the Samruddhi Mahamarg, bringing traffic to a standstill for hours.

“Such actions cause immense public inconvenience. Even ambulances were stuck in traffic for hours. I appeal to the protesters to join discussions instead of holding the public hostage,” he said.

Fadnavis cautioned that “miscreants often infiltrate such agitations”, turning them violent, and warned that the government would not tolerate rail roko or similar disruptive demonstrations.

“While there are genuine participants in the agitation, we cannot allow miscreants to exploit it and create law and order problems,” he asserted.

On the protesters’ demand for a farm loan waiver, Fadnavis clarified that the government’s current priority is to provide direct relief to farmers hit by recent heavy rains rather than routing funds through banks.

“When we waive loans, the money goes to banks, not farmers. Right now, our focus is on helping farmers directly,” he said, noting that the state has already announced a Rs 3,200-crore relief package, with compensation being credited to affected farmers’ accounts.

Fadnavis added that the government is not opposed to loan waivers, but such a decision will be taken “at an appropriate time” after assessing the fiscal situation.
