Nagpur: It was déjà vu for commuters on Tuesday evening as the Shaheed Gowari Flyover turned into a parking lot in motion, bumper to bumper, and in some stretches, super bumper to bumper. Vehicles inched forward painfully, tempers flared, and honks filled the air.
The culprit? The usual suspects, non-functional traffic signals at RBI Square, Zero Mile, and the old Morris College ‘T’ Point. As the evening peak hour kicked in, the signal lights went dark, replaced by weary, overworked traffic cops trying to manually orchestrate the chaos. The result was a messy ballet of buses, two-wheelers, and cars jostling for space, with confused pedestrians darting through the madness.
For many regular commuters, this is no surprise. “It happens almost every evening. The signals are switched off, and everything just collapses,” grumbled a motorist stuck in the jam. Others questioned why such prime intersections on one of the city’s main arterial roads are left to descend into disorder on a daily basis.
Adding to the misery, the condition of the road itself is far from smooth. Uneven patches, worn-out lane markings, and poor illumination make navigating the stretch more stressful than it should be. As one biker put it, “It’s not just a traffic jam, it’s an obstacle course.”
Until authorities fix the signals and improve road conditions, Nagpur’s evening commute on this route will remain less of a drive and more of a test of patience.
