Nagpur: In a decisive offensive against the city’s shadowy land mafia, Nagpur Police are gearing up to launch a dedicated ‘Task Force’ aimed at dismantling the so-called ‘D-gangs,’ syndicates accused of forging documents, manipulating government records, and illegally grabbing prime real estate.
Borrowing its name from Dawood Ibrahim’s infamous network, the term ‘D-gang’ has come to symbolise a deep-rooted menace in Nagpur’s booming property market. With land prices surging due to mega projects like MIHAN-SEZ and Metro Rail expansion, these mafia outfits have allegedly preyed on farmers, widows, senior citizens, and other vulnerable landowners, often with threats, coercion, and violence.
Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal, the architect of the new Task Force, warned that the days of these racketeers are numbered. “We have identified several big fish in the land mafia. A specialised team will relentlessly hunt them down. Forgers, middlemen, and masterminds, none will be spared. Ironclad legal action is coming,” he said.
Sources said the Task Force will zero in on forged title deeds, fake sale agreements, and encroachment rackets, with early targets including high-value plots along Wardha Road, MIHAN, Godhni, and select pockets in North Nagpur. Over 150 land-grab cases were filed in the past year alone, many involving outright intimidation or assault.
This is not the first time Nagpur Police have taken on the land mafia. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed under former CP K Venkatesham made early gains, cracking down on notorious Gwalbanshi gangs, but momentum fizzled out within months. This time, police brass insist, there will be no let-up until the syndicates are dismantled.
The Task Force is expected to be operational within weeks, and the city’s most brazen land sharks are already feeling the heat.
