Nagpur : Following a brief lull, torrential monsoon rains have returned to East Vidarbha, severely impacting daily life across several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Nagpur Centre has issued a Red Alert for Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on July 25. An Orange Alert has also been declared for Nagpur and Wardha districts.
Taking note of the forecast, local administrations have urged residents, especially farmers and those in low-lying areas, to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
Schools and Colleges Shut in Bhandara
The Bhandara district administration, acting on the IMD’s Red Alert, has declared a holiday for all schools, colleges, and anganwadi centers on Thursday. Authorities have advised residents near riverbanks and flood-prone villages to stay indoors and remain vigilant.
Since the afternoon of July 24, continuous downpours have been reported across all talukas of Bhandara. Although there was a brief pause overnight, rainfall picked up again early Friday morning.
Red Alert for Chandrapur: Precautionary Orders Issued
Chandrapur has also been placed under Red Alert. Acting swiftly, District In-Charge Collector Dr. Nitin Vyavahare announced a one-day closure for all educational institutions, including private coaching classes and anganwadis. The directive aims to avoid any untoward incidents, with the administration appealing to citizens to follow safety protocols strictly.
Gosekhurd Dam Increases Water Discharge as Rain Intensifies
Due to continuous heavy rainfall in the Gosekhurd dam region and adjoining areas since July 24 afternoon, the Wainganga River’s water level has risen considerably. As a precautionary step, dam authorities have increased water discharge early this morning.
Currently, 23 dam gates have been opened by half a meter, releasing water at a rate of 91,895 cusecs. This is an increase from 21 gates opened on Wednesday. If the heavy rainfall continues as expected in Bhandara district today, officials may further raise the gates to manage reservoir levels and avoid overflow.
Public Advisory
Citizens across East Vidarbha, especially in Red and Orange Alert zones, are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from riverbanks, and follow all updates from local authorities and disaster management teams.
