Nagpur: In a major administrative move aimed at strengthening law and order, the Home Ministry has approved the formation of a sixth police zone in Nagpur city, along with sanctioning one Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and two Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP) positions.
The decision comes in response to Nagpur’s rapid urban expansion, population growth, and rising pressure on existing police jurisdictions.
Currently, Nagpur operates under five police zones, with Zone 5 being the largest and most crime-sensitive. It covers high-density and slum-prone areas like Jaripatka, Yashodhanagar, Kalamna, Pardi, Kapil Nagar, Koradi, Kamptee, and New Kamptee. Maintaining law and order in this zone has become increasingly difficult due to the large population and complex socio-economic challenges.
New Zone May Include Rural Pockets
Preliminary reports suggest that the sixth zone may incorporate parts of Nagpur’s rural region, including areas beyond Koradi, such as Khaparkheda. Some police stations currently under Zone 5 are also expected to be reassigned to the new zone to balance the load.
While the creation of the new zone is a welcome step, there are growing concerns about manpower shortages.
- Officials have indicated that staff will be redistributed from existing stations.
- However, the overall police force strength has not increased in proportion to jurisdictional demands, raising questions about on-ground implementation.
This structural upgrade aims to make policing more localized and efficient, especially in sensitive and under-served areas. The coming weeks will reveal how effectively field-level resources, infrastructure, and human capital are aligned to make Zone 6 operational.
