Nagpur: As part of ‘Operation Thunder – Let’s Unite, Create a Drug-Free Society’, Nagpur City Police destroyed a huge quantity of seized drugs worth over Rs 1.32 crore on Tuesday. The action took place during Anti-Drug Awareness Week, organised ahead of International Anti-Drug Day which will be observed globally on June 26.
The destruction of narcotics took place in the presence of senior police officials, environment authorities, and local students. Under the guidance of Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal, a total of 714.23 kg of various narcotic substances including MD (Mephedrone), ganja, charas, and other stuff were destroyed at Maharashtra Environment Limited, a pollution control authorised facility located in MIDC Area, Butibori.
The total street value of the drugs destroyed is estimated at Rs 1.32 crore. A press release of city police stated that this large scale destruction was conducted under the supervision of the Drugs Disposal Committee and as per the norms of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). Students from various schools and colleges were specially invited to witness the process and were given awareness sessions on how dangerous drugs can be for human health and society.
Senior officers who attended the event included: Addl CP Crime Vasant Pardeshi, DCP Detection Rahul Maknikar, DCP HQ Ashwini Patil, PI Gajanan Gulhane and his team from the Anti-Narcotics Cell.
