Nagpur: A 40-year-old man sleeping on the footpath near Gajanan Maharaj Temple in Subhash Nagar was killed in a hit-and-run incident early Saturday, June 21 morning. Rana Pratap Nagar Police have registered a case against an unidentified car driver for causing the fatal accident.
The deceased has been identified as Ravi Manohar Chavan, a painter by profession and a resident of Plot No. 117, Gandhinagar, Ambazari. Chavan, who was unmarried, would often stay alternately at his nephew’s residence and his maternal aunt’s home in Subhash Nagar.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 3:30 am on June 21, when Chavan was asleep on the footpath near the Gajanan Maharaj Temple in Subhash Nagar. At that time, a speeding black car, being driven recklessly and negligently, rammed into him and fled the scene without stopping.
Police rushed the seriously injured Chavan to the Government Medical College and Hospital Trauma Centre, where doctors declared him dead during treatment at around 6:00 am.
Based on a complaint lodged by Rajesh Ramkumar Upadhyay (35), the deceased’s nephew and a resident of Gandhinagar, Rana Pratap Nagar Police have registered a case under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 134, 177, and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act against the unknown driver.
Further investigation into the incident is currently underway. Police are scanning CCTV footage from the area to trace the vehicle involved.
