Nagpur: A 22-year-old woman from Butibori’s Sonegaon village tragically ended her life just 35 days after her marriage, allegedly driven to suicide by persistent dowry-related harassment, threats, and physical abuse by her husband and in-laws. Police have arrested all four accused.
The deceased, Mayuri Dahule, had tied the knot with Abhishek Dahule on April 25 after a four-year-long relationship. But what began as a love marriage quickly turned into a nightmare, as Mayuri was reportedly subjected to relentless demands for dowry, beatings, and mental torture by Abhishek, his parents Deepak and Kusum, and his brother Aditya.
According to the Butibori police, the Dahule family demanded Rs 2 lakh from Mayuri’s parents, despite an earlier agreement that they would bear the wedding expenses. “They accused us of not giving enough. We had already handed over Rs 20,000, but their demands didn’t stop,” said Mayuri’s father Baba Thakre, a daily wage worker from Rama village. “My son visited them several times to intervene, but they threatened to kill both him and Mayuri.”
Mayuri, the eldest of three siblings, had completed her 12th and taken up nursing training. Before marriage, she supported her family financially by working as a daily wage laborer. Her father recounted how the family waited until she turned 18 before agreeing to the marriage, hoping for her happiness.
But on the night of May 30, while all four in-laws were away at a function, Mayuri allegedly took her life by hanging herself with a sari from the ceiling fan. Shockingly, the in-laws did not inform her family. The news came only after a hospital contact informed a relative, who then called the Thakre family at 1 a.m. on May 31.
Upon receiving the information, Thakre rushed to the hospital and later lodged a formal police complaint. All four accused were arrested the same day and produced before court on June 1. “They have been remanded to magisterial custody,” said a senior official from Butibori Police Station.
The incident has sparked outrage locally, with women’s rights activists calling for stricter enforcement of dowry laws and timely intervention to prevent such tragedies. Mayuri’s death is a grim reminder of the deep-rooted social evil that continues to claim lives despite being criminalized.
