Nagpur: The Nagpur traffic police have recently disclosed a concerning surge in traffic rule violations, with a staggering 10.89 lakh instances reported in 2023. This revelation underscores a disturbing trend of non-compliance with traffic regulations on the city’s roads, necessitating swift and comprehensive measures to enhance the safety of road users.

The gravity of the situation becomes even more apparent when considering the tragic consequences of such violations. In 2023 alone, 286 individuals lost their lives in road accidents in Nagpur, highlighting the urgent need for intervention to prevent further casualties.

According to statistics of Traffic Police, Sitabuldi division emerged as the epicentre of the rule violations, with a whopping 1,57,851 cases. The cases constitute a 14.48 percent of the total violations recorded across Nagpur, including failure to wear helmets, signal jumping, tinted glasses, and haphazard parking of vehicles.

Securing the second spot in the dubious ranking, Indora division accounted for 12.97 percent of the total violations with 1,41,387 cases. Ajni division reported 1,17,119 rule violations which represented 10.74 percent of the total cases recorded in Nagpur. In contrast, the Sonegaon division displayed a commendable adherence to traffic rules with the lowest number of violations at 77,527 cases which constitute a modest 7.11 percent of the city’s total violations.

The data further indicates that Sadar recorded 92,240 rule violations, while the Cotton Market Division and Lakadganj closely followed with 1,04,305 and 1,03,622 cases, respectively. Sakkardara Division reported 1,15,807 rule violations, Kamptee Division registered 96,183 offences, and MIDC Division documented 83,829 violations.

The sheer scale of the reported violations suggests a multifaceted challenge that demands immediate attention. Addressing this issue requires a concerted effort from law enforcement agencies, local authorities, and the community at large. A comprehensive strategy should be devised to not only enforce existing traffic regulations but also to raise awareness about responsible road behavior.
