Nagpur: The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Swargiya Dadasaheb Kalmegh Smruti Dental College and Hospital in Nagpur conducted a significant event on August 26, 2023, as part of the nationwide initiative known as the “Maxillofacial Trauma Awareness Campaign – Saving Lives Saving Faces.”
This event, organized by the Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India (AOMSI), aimed to raise awareness about preventing maxillofacial injuries and road traffic accidents, with a special focus on college students aged 18 to 25 years.
The campaign was well-attended, with over 200 college students from Datta Meghe Institute of Physiotherapy in Hingna, Nagpur, actively participating. The event featured a video message from Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, emphasizing the importance of road safety and highlighting the initiatives of AOMSI.
The core focus of the campaign was to educate the young audience on the prevention of maxillofacial injuries, road traffic accidents, the role and responsibilities of first responders, basic trauma life support, and the selection of ideal helmets. Lectures and video demonstrations were conducted to sensitize the participants.
Towards the conclusion of the campaign, all participants pledged to strictly adhere to traffic safety protocols. The pledge included a strong emphasis on the necessity of wearing helmets for both drivers and pillion riders, as well as the importance of using seat belts while driving cars.
Maxillofacial Surgeons Dr. Akshay Mishra and Dr. Mayur Gawande led the campaign, with the support of dedicated postgraduate students and interns, including Dr. Alvina Khan, Dr. Ram Mehendale, Dr. Hinal Kanphade, Dr. Kalyani Bagde, Dr. Shweta Borkar, Dr. Simran Vaswani, Dr. Shadab Ahmed, Dr. Yugandhar Gedam, Dr. Prerna Banothe, and Dr. Vaibhav Sable. The entire team expressed their gratitude to Dr. Sachin Chaudhary, Principal of Datta Meghe College of Physiotherapy, Dr. Manu Goel, Dr. Akshay Daga, Dr. Prafulla Gaikwad, HOD of the Dept of OMFS, Dean Dr. Deepak Nagpal, and the higher authorities of Swargiya Dadasaheb Kalmegh Smruti Dental College & Hospital Nagpur for their unwavering support and guidance, which contributed to the campaign’s resounding success. This initiative has taken a significant step in promoting road safety and saving lives in the region.
